What is GARM™ Ballistic Underwear?

GARM™ Ballistic Underwear (BALUW) is an advanced next-to-skin protection system developed by Hexonia GmbH, part of the NFM Group. It combines ballistic protection, flame resistance, and exceptional comfort—engineered to support soldiers in high-risk environments.

How is BALUW Different from Traditional Ballistic Underwear?

Unlike conventional ballistic base layers, BALUW is designed as a fully integrated part of the combat uniform. Its key advantage lies in its superior comfort and cooling sensation against the skin, making it highly effective for long-term wear during demanding operations.

What Materials Are Used in BALUW?

The BALUW system includes t-shirts, boxers, long underwear, and balaclavas—crafted from a proprietary technical blend:

  • 88% technical silk
  • Polyamide
  • Elastane
  • Polypropylene

This composition delivers:

  • High durability and tensile strength
  • Natural cooling and breathability
  • Excellent moisture-wicking performance
  • Stretch retention for a secure fit

Why is seamless construction important?

BALUW features seamless zones in critical areas, reducing weak points in the garment and enhancing both comfort and blast resilience. This helps ensure even ballistic coverage and lowers the risk of skin irritation.

Additional design benefits:

  • 3D-knitted zones for added ventilation and flexibility
  • Flat seams to prevent pressure points
  • Tight, ergonomic fit to minimise air gaps and maximise moisture transfer

Is BALUW tested and certified?

BALUW is certified in accordance with STANAG 2920, with a V50 > 200 m/s against 0.13 g RCC fragments. It also meets DIN EN ISO 15025-A for flame protection:

  • Does not melt or drip
  • Withstands direct flame for at least three seconds

These features make BALUW highly compatible with flame-retardant systems such as the GARM™ Combat Clothing System.

Is There a Version for Female Operators?

BALUW is available in female-specific designs, with custom fits for enhanced comfort and operational performance. The system offers modular sleeve and leg lengths and optional colours for integration with different uniform standards.
